If we all create our dreams unconsciously, perhaps resisting their meaning afterwards, Munro may have done the same thing - her papers do not include anything like deliberate biblical plans for this story or any other, and she has repeatedly said that she does not consciously put meanings into her stories. During the rest of this book I am going to say a good deal about allusion; but while it is impossible to discuss it without suggesting intention on Munro's part, intention is not what I am concerned with - unless we mean that of the creator largely hidden from a writer's conscious mind, or of the creation itself as absorbing whatever is consonant with it.

And we can note this symphony's intended dedication: to Napoleon, Wellington's great enemy. A number of tragedies thus resonate in the background of Munro's story; nor do these belong to other times and places alone, any more than Marrakesh does. While neither Arthur Comber nor Blaikie Noble is actually a soldier, there are references here to both World Wars, and in fact the original affair of Char and Blaikie takes place in the summer of 19 18 - if Blaikie were any older, we are told, he would be in France.

But they have always had something haunting about them as well: when one looks into a mirror one is seeing another person; and while this other is the same as the perceiving subject, the subject has been projected as well as reversed between left and right so as to be no longer subject but object, and an opposite sort of object. When Del, in her grief at the loss of Garnet French, looks into the hall mirror, it is reflection as mystery that she experiences: Without diminishment of pain I observed myself; I was amazed to think that the person suffering was me, for it was not me at all; I was watching.
