The Irish found work digging canals and building railroads, and in the steam-powered mills and factories that began to appear in New Jersey's cities. Iron, leather goods, jewelry, and textiles were produced in Newark. Jersey City made soap, bricks, pencils, pottery, and steel. Trenton was known for its pottery, flour mills, sawmills, iron foundries, and textile mills; it also supplied New York and Philadelphia with grain. Paterson recovered from its false start in the 1790s to become a thriving industrial center.
The son of Italian immigrant parents, Sinatra got his start singing in roadside bars in Hoboken and other New Jersey communities in the 1930s. 1941, factories went into double and triple shifts to keep up with the flood of orders for military hardware. Prosperity quickly returned to New Jersey; more than 500,000 new jobs were created in the state between 1941 and 1945. The state also provided space for important military bases. 3 million soldiers went through basic training at Fort Dix, and 2 million passed through Fort Kilmer on their way to the fighting overseas.
When the battle of Gettysburg raged in Pennsylvania in July 1863, however, Hancock immediately traveled to the battlefield and organized care for the thousands of wounded men.
