It is not clear whether cholinergic BF is derived from a single or dual germinal source, despite an apparently continuous time of origin. Previous studies using AChE, p75 NGFR and ChAT did not report clear continuity between septal neurons and more caudal neurons in the substantial innominata and basal nucleus.
What is the time course of development of noncholinergic BF neurons innervating the cerebral cortex? There is a substantial population of noncholinergic BF neurons projecting to the cortex, and some of these are GABAergic. Although some information is available on the organization and function of these noncholinergic BF neurons in 35 adulthood (reviewed by Semba, 2000), little information is available on their development. It will be important to investigate and compare the functions of these two components of the BF system both in adulthood and during development.
