Consistent with the parents-as-co therapists’ model originally developed by Eric Schopler for children, parents of adults are part of the team that focuses on the needs of the adult client. While one staff therapist is providing the adult with counseling on identified goals, another therapist meets with the parents helping with their issues of being a parent of an adult with ASD. Not every case is handled the same way; in some instances, parents meet less frequently than the adult client does. With young children in this model, parents are expected to carry out home teaching activities, teach self-help and other skills, whereas with adults, parents need to figure out where community supports can be found to provide direct service for their adult child.

The relationship between typically developing siblings has been extensively studied; however, very few studies have been conducted in order to investigate the interactions and quality of relationship between siblings when one has autism. , 2006; Fisman, Wolf, Elllison, & Freeman, 2000; Giallo & Gavidia-Payne, 2006; Hastings, 2003; Ross & Cuskelly, 2006) and fewer prosocial behaviors towards their sibling with autism in some studies (Hastings, 2003; Knott, Lewis, & Williams, 1995), and appropriate psychological and social-emotional adjustment in others (Hastings, 2007; Kaminsky & Dewey, 2002; Mates, 1990; 2 Families of Adults 29 Verté, Roeyers, & Buyesse, 2003).

Concerns for the future, with the parents throughout their child’s life, reemerge as their child goes through the developmental phases from childhood to adolescence and then again as they transition to becoming an adult. As the child becomes an adolescent and then an adult, most parents of typically developing children find that their role changes from being the primary caretaker, educator, and financial supporter to having a more removed role in their child’s life. However, for parents of children with disabilities this change may not occur.
