Diatom analysis of a core for Loch Tanna shows acidification by approximately 0·5 pH units, suggesting that all surface waters on the granitic part of the island are similarly affected. 3. Trossachs. Streams and lakes with afforested catchments in the Loch Ard area are acidified and have poor fisheries. Loch Tinker, a lake with a moorland catchment, has been slightly acidified, suggesting that surface waters on the meta-sediments in this area are severely affected only when catchments are afforested.

V. Holden Prof. K. Mellanby Dr P. S. Maitland Dr S. 1 INTRODUCTION This section of the report documents the progress which has been made since our first report (Watt Committee, 1984) in assessing the impact of acid deposition on the freshwater environment. Considerable advances have been made during the past four years in understanding the history and causes of acidification, particularly in its more acute phase between 1930 and 1970. Firmer conclusions have now been drawn concerning the extent of acidification in Britain, the part played by anthropogenic emissions, the effect of afforestation in vulnerable areas and the reversibility of acidification processes.
