They pitched tents and called Virginia their settlement Jamestown. It became the first • JAMESTOWN permanent English settlement in the New World. Chesapeake Bay, with the James River indicated in red. 28 Just like the Roanoke pioneers, the colonists of Jamestown experienced major difficulties. Of the 144 people who sailed from England, only 105 survived the trip. They disembarked on May 14, 1607, and 12 days later faced their first battle with Native Americans. They made the mistake of building their forts, church, and John Smith (1580-1631) homes in a low, swampy area.
