3. Coded Reference Beam. Another effective technique for reducing the effects of the ghost images involves the coding of the reference beam. Both the amplitude and phase of the reference wave impinging on the hologram plate have decidedly different characteristics for each of the colors used to make the hologram. This can be simply achieved by placing a diffused glass in the path of the reference beam, thereby coding the reference wave. When reconstructing the multicolor image, the developed hologram must be accurately replaced in the position it occupied during recording, and reilluminated with the identical coded reference beam used in its formation.
