This was erected in 1854, commissioned by the Prussian military authorities in memory of the dead of the 1848 revolution. The building of a hospital in the northern section and the Gnadenkirche in the southern part further encroached on the park area towards the end of the century. The place lapsed into complete insignificance after being devastated by the Second World War and when the ruined historical buildings had to make way for border posts when Berlin was divided into two. The reunification of Germany offered the city an opportunity to give a new face to the site, which had been neglected and was in part used as a car park.

But at the same time, it was quite pragmatically intended to be a starting point for an improvement in living conditions in this problematical quarter. The architects’ overall plan calls for a district park that is intended to develop further. There are four main components at the centre of the growing memorial: the tree and the area immediately around it, the trace of the devastated building, the markings for the linking paths that were destroyed and a new promenade as the backbone of a green area open to a variety of uses.

35 But the archaic formal language the designer used in the garden, the untamed force of old legends and the irresistible attraction of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales tempts viewers to offer quite different readings, and it is almost like the forbidden glimpse of the glowing mound of earth at night: woe betide anyone who gets lost here! The mound of earth with a cut in it thrusts up five metres from its flat surroundings and shows a narrow water-channel the way towards the entrance of the building.
