The judge dismissed the charge against Dolan. The Kid also testified unsuccessfully in a separate trial, this one against Colonel Nathan Dudley. Dudley had been the officer in charge of the army detachment that took part in the siege of McSween’s house. He was charged with refusing to stop the deliberate burning of the lawyer’s home. In return for his cooperation in these trials, the Kid expected the government to treat his own cases as mere formalities, but things turned out differently. His first trial concerned the charge of killing Sheriff Brady.
