HMS Avenger-was no large fleet carrier, but a light escort carrier, a class of vessel created by affixing a flightdeck atop the hull of a merchant ship. Her complement of aircraft comprised just six Sea Hurricanes and three Swordfish anti-submarine biplanes. Although few in number, this was a distinct improvement on the single, expendable Hurricane perched on the catapult of a CAM ship. Despite displaying the inevitable signs of inexperience associated with any pioneering venture, AvengervtoxAA play a large part in breaking up attacks on the convoy, both from the air and from under the sea.
KG 30's crews also targeted the railway system carrying the supplies to the south, 17 Ju 88s bombing the station at Louhi, close to the shores of the White Sea, on 13 June. However the strengthening of Soviet fighter defences along this important stretch of line was making such missions increasingly hazardous. Another attack by KG 30 on a railway bridge in the same area two days later led to a running battle in which one Ju 88 was downed and two others seriously damaged. It was not long before the first reports of the next convoy began coming in.
Avenger was sunk by U-boat U-155 during the early hours of 15 November 1942 while escorting convoy MKF 1(Y) off the Portuguese coast. A single torpedo hit the ship's bomb room and ignited the munitions stored there, causing numerous secondary explosions. With her back broken, the carrier sunk in under five minutes, taking 68 officers and 446 ratings with it although this might well have been the result of Luftwaffe foresight rather than pure chance. The doubling of numbers of torpedo aircraft in the far north also heralded a role reversal for KG 30.
